I have had very good success with combining psychodynamic theory with the newer DBT model in the treatment of borderline personality disorder. Patients who suffer from this disorder are extremely sensitive, and so need a great deal of validation before any change can occur. I employ a blend of clear boundaries, a caring manner, and a collaborative program of positive change. I prefer to see BPD clients in a skills group plus an individual session, but at times I see them twice a week without group. The four areas we work on are: improving sense of self; alternatives to self-destructive behaviors in tolerating distress; improving interpersonal relationships; and learning to better regulate emotions. Bette Ann is a nationally known clinician, trainer, teacher, consultant and interventionist in the Chemical Dependency, Mental Health and EAP fields. Before moving to So. Florida in 2005, she maintained an active psychotherapy practice in the Washington, DC area, in addition to teaching at Catholic University School of Social Work and Rutgers Summer School of Alcohol & Drug Studies. Dr. Weinstein conducts training seminars on chemical dependency, anxiety and depression, clinical supervision, borderline personality disorder, and structured interventions. She has published articles on denial, ethics, and a new addiction diagnostic tool. She holds a B.A. from Wheaton College in Massachusetts, an MSW from Boston University and a Ph.D. from Catholic University of America.
